3rd Graders worked on their self-assessment skills using the rubric below

We started by analyzing a work of art using the 10x2 technique. This is a wonderful differentiated technique that helps students delve deeper in their analysis and reveals their art knowledge. They analyzed this example project.
At first, their observations were very basic; they see a gumball machine, they see a quarter slot, etc. Then they noticed the principles and elements of art. They also started noticing that the artist did not meet all of the requirements for this lesson; no jagged edges, no scribbling and correct color usage.
They used the information they collected to critique the project using the criteria on the assessment rubric. Next, they critiqued their own project using the same rubric. We do not "grade" our work; we critique it. A grade is often viewed as final. Learning is an unending process. They do not record letter or numerical grades. Instead, they write a couple of sentences reflecting on whether or not they met the criteria. This helps them see the connection between effort and success, identify techniques that work for them, recognize areas for improvement and strengthen their Growth Mindset. Plus it provides opportunities to make improvements, encourages them to apply what they learned to future activities, and reveals their depth of knowledge. This is an intense learning experience for them and the teacher.
