StanleyFinal Draft Dots
Last week 5th graders experimented in collaborative groups. They tried to make different kinds of lines using strips of paper. They folded, waved, and looped. Then they had to assemble the strips into a 3D sculpture. They did a gallery tour to see the solutions of other groups. They drew a plan of their independent sculpture. Today they made their plans a reality. Some students have finished their dots. They framed them in swirled, gold frames like Vashti's in the book The Dot. Plus, the signed it.

Finally, I have seen all of my classes for the first time. I loved reviewing the Elements of Art: Line, Shape and Color with these colorful paintings. This was a great way to stretch our art muscles after summer 3rd Grade Eby1st grade Seegert5th Grade Chrysochoos2nd Grade BobergWe kicked off our celebration of International Dot Day. The Dot is written and illustrated by Peter. H Reynolds. I love this book because it encourages to take on challenges and not to be afraid of making mistakes. Through practice, hard work and not giving up, we can grow our intelligence, talents and abilities. I use it to reinforce our development of a Growth Mindset Young Fives KudziaThey made dots by painting a plate and pressing it to their paper. This introduced printmaking. You painted on the 1st day of school?! Are you crazy?! Crazy? No. Daring? Yes. The first day is full of rules, rules, rules and more rules. I didn't want to look out at a crowd of glazed over eyes and overloaded brains. So I decided to jump right in and have them stretch their art muscles with a painting activity that explored the Elements of Art: Line, Shape and Color. It was such a treat to have a day full of color and creativity. |
